ELIZABETH SPENT the rest of the evening alone. When Maud came to help her prepare for bed, she refused her help.

"Did you deliver the letter?" she asked.

"Yes, ma'am. I put it in Mr. Darcy’s hand."

Elizabeth felt anger swell up inside her. So he was refusing to speak to her. Surely he understood that there were matters they needed to discuss. "Are Mr. Darcy's rooms on this floor?"

Maud hesitated and fidgeted with her hands.

"Maud!" Elizabeth stood up. "I would like to know where Mr. Darcy's rooms are. He is my husband."

The maid started to stutter. "But I was told... oh ma'am, I can't."

Elizabeth tried not to lose her temper.

"I am the mistress of this house," she said firmly, "and I want to know where my husband's rooms are."

The maid suddenly sighed. "They are on the floor below, to the left of the stairs," she said quietly.

"Thank you."

Maud looked as if she was about to cry. "Please, ma'am. Don't tell Mrs. Cooper, I told you. She will be very angry if she finds out."

"I will tell no one," Elizabeth assured her. "Goodnight, Maud."

The maid still looked fearful, but bobbed a curtsey. "Goodnight, ma'am."

Elizabeth smiled grimly as the door closed. Her husband could not avoid her forever. If he would not come to her, she would go to him.
